Dear readers,
On this day March 31st 2019, I dedicate this blog post to mothers everywhere.
As I am not a mum, I cannot fully understand what it means to be a mum or the different experiences that women have as mothers. Knowing this, I asked four incredible women (one of them being my mum!) who are at different stages of motherhood, to share their experiences as mothers so far. The question asked was, "What does motherhood mean to you?"
Of Motherly Things
Babies in nappies
With mouths stuffed with dummies
Sleep that’s disrupted ‘cos junior is crying
Bottles to make and wash never ending
These are a few of those motherly things
Pushchairs to take with us in cars and buses
Toys on the floor
Coloured ‘art’ on the room door
Hands, fingers, feet that will need a good clean
These are a few of those motherly things
School runs and weekends spent rushing to classes
Homework and reading; make sure it’s completed
Rules to make sure that they’re not misbehaving
These are a few of those motherly things but...
When he hugs me
When she calls me
When they say I’m mum
I simply forget all those motherly things
For that’s what I am... a mum!
Yours Sincerely,
Susan Goh.
Being a mum is... The greatest honour ever bestowed - the pride and joy just overflows.
The love in your heart is just filled to the brim.
Life changing.
Life enhancing.
The width, the depth and the height of the love that you’ll feel for that little bundle of joy cannot even be put into words.
The God-given miracle of life.
Being a mum to me is the best feeling ever in the world.
Nothing compares,
Nothing comes close.
The laughter, the tears, the joy, the pride, the tiredness, the sleepless nights. It’s all worthwhile. Becoming a parent makes you want to be the very best version of yourself that you possibly can.
Watching them blossom, watching them grow, watching them learn, watching them stumble as they go.
Their little smiles that light up their face, little fingers, little toes, tiny arms around your neck as they snuggle into your shoulder.
The innocence you wish you could preserve forever.
Wanting to keep them safe.
Their little faces when they sleep.
Being a mum... The greatest feeling in the world. Nothing compares, nothing comes close. The greatest blessing and gift from God above.
Yours Sincerely,
Anon.
As I write this I’ve woken up from 3 hours of sleep following a night shift to dress up rush down nearly 30 minutes away to attend a “spring concert”! Beyoncé? Or The 21st century’s version of Mozart or Bach who is performing a private concert for the afternoon on London road, Leicester???. The answer - NO! I’m actually watching my 7 year old and 5 year old sing about dinosaurs and fish swimming in the sea accompanied with hand actions and dances... As incredible as it would be to hear and belt “single ladies” with the Queen Bey herself, this is one of the many important and outstanding concerts that I’ve been too and will continue to go to, why? One answer, the very thing that makes me run on limited sleep or sometimes reach for higher goals and ambitions - LOVE. Not just any kind of love, this one is the type that sticks to your very soul, it suddenly redefines your very existence and expands your own limits far beyond what you could imagine, the love of a mother.
I became a mother at 24 and the excitement of a new life that would have parts of me filled me. Watching as my belly expanded, as stretch marks came and as I counted the days and minutes till I met my first son. I read books, watched every YouTube clip on development at week 9, week 24, week 32... But I was also reminded by more experienced mothers to expect sleepless nights, aches and worries. Boy did they tell the truth and more, I don’t think I’ve slept normally since both my sons have been born. In fact studies show parents only sleep normally once their kids are 10 years old!!! 10!!!!!!
Oh the sacrifice of sleep, of money, of time and of the effort of answering question after question about the simple and the complicated, from curious little heads. This is motherhood, fortified in sacrifice and fierce love, it’s about early mornings and late nights. But the dichotomy is also the joy of seeing the first steps or them performing a rubbish boring song but doing it with all their little hearts, or better still when on a crap day where you’ve had nothing but stress to hear a little voice say four precious words that ring and permeate the very soul - “Mummy, I love you”.
Yours Sincerely,
Faith Maburutse.
What does motherhood mean to me?
I am privileged to be a mother and I do not take it for granted. This experience has help me see the world from a child's point of view - with love, faith, innocence and no care in the world, with this I have been able to weather the storms from the cradle phase and now to the empty nest. Although I have three daughters, each of them is different in their choices. From being the one who weighs risks and steps back, to the one who wants to take risks and to that who would not want to hear of risks, it is a different ball game for each of the three.
My experience with them just corroborate the fact that no child comes to the world with a manual for training. Be that as it may, there is a manual I have used over the years, the Holy Bible, and this I have handed over to them believing God to direct their paths in life. I do not count myself worthy, but for God's grace I am blessed to be a mother. It doesn't really matter whether one has a biological child or not, I believe that every woman is endowed with the motherboard instinct, and uses this for the benefit of people of all ages.
In as much as we do this, we are doing it unto the Lord. His rewards are real and shall show forth in due time. peace to all women reading this.
Yours Sincerely,
Derin Olorunshola.
As you've heard from these incredible women, besides every struggle that comes with being a mum, they wouldn't change it for anything and they wear this 'hat' with honour.
A HUGE thank you to mums everywhere, you really do the most!
Happy Mother's Day!
Yours Sincerely,
Damilola.
