5 simple tips on how to pass your theory test.

Updated: Mar 22, 2019

Dear readers,

Although it has been a few months since I passed my theory test, I have a few tips that I have learnt, that you may find useful when preparing for your theory test. For those of you who do not know, there are two parts to the theory test - the multiple-choice test and the hazard perception test, both you must pass to pass the overall test. To pass the multiple-choice test, you must score 43 out of 50 and for the hazard perception test, you must score 44 out of 75.

1. Read the highway code.

For some reason, a lot of people don't read the highway code when preparing for their theory test, which is completely fine but I actually found the book so helpful because I literally knew nothing about driving and it was a great way to learn and understand everything to do with driving.

2. Test yourself.

Driving test apps are great to practice the multiple-choice questions but I mainly used a website called Top Tests (https://toptests.co.uk) to test myself. This site includes the highway code, hazard perception tips and driving tips if you are currently taking driving lessons (like me!). It is especially helpful whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, as you can choose different levels to test yourself, for example if you are still struggling to remember certain answers, you can start with the 'easy' tests and work your way up.

3. Practice the hazard perception test.

Finding a hazard perception test online good enough to practice on can be very hard, especially if you don't want to pay the extra. Here is a link that I used that was a close estimate to the actual test, https://hazardperceptiontest.net/

4. Review ALL your wrong answers.

It is so easy to take any test and ignore the questions you got wrong. The fact that any question could come up on the theory test means that it is important to review your wrong answers to questions, to ensure that you choose the correct answer if the question came up on your test.

5. Time yourself.

As you may know, the first part of the theory test is timed, you have 57 minutes to answer all the multiple-choice questions, whereas the hazard perception test does not have a specific time set but requires you to be click the hazards as quickly and accurately as possible, as this will give you more marks. Knowing this, it may be useful to time yourself to see whether or not you are able to complete the multiple-choice test in 57 minutes and as well as increasing your speed of response to hazards when practising the hazard perception test.

Yours Sincerely,

Damilola.
