A Toast to TEFL and Beyond

Updated: Feb 20, 2020

Dear readers,

Today I completed a 50-hour TEFL course.

For those, reading this and thinking, "What is a TEFL course?"

TEFL stands for 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' and by taking a TEFL course, you can teach English.

Taking a TEFL course has been something that God placed in my heart since 2017 and I completely believe that He created the perfect time and place to do this. I genuinely believe that I couldn't have planned it better, from the fact that it cost me about £100 cheaper and that He gave me the perfect environment to meet a bunch of amazing and encouraging characters to do this course with. It felt like I was being shown another example that people with different race, backgrounds and personalities can come together for a common goal, which is always incredible to see.

My experience completing this course honestly opened my eyes to just how difficult it is to learn English and how complicated the language really is! Just to prove this to you, I found a few interesting facts about the English language:

  1. English is the official language of 67 countries.

  2. We pronounce "ough" in 9 different ways. The following sentence contains them all: "A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."

  3. The English language has 75 contronyms, these are words with opposite meanings. See for yourself

  4. The word ‘lol’ was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011.

  5. Month, orange, silver, and purple do not rhyme with any other word.

  6. Some words exist only in plural form, for example: glasses, scissors, tongs, trousers, jeans, pants, pyjamas.

  7. Aproximately 4,000 words are added to the dictionary each year.

With this TEFL certificate, I pray to travel and teach children in different countries, to give more people an opportunity to learn English either as a hobby to learn another language or academically and also for me to experience other cultures around the world.

This is a topic that will be written about in the near future.
